Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is an arcade sports game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. The game refines the core tennis mechanics of the long-running series, adding new verticality and power-up elements to the traditional court play.
The core gameplay centers around rallies where players match shot types—topspins, slices, lobs, and drops—to color-coded Chance Spots that appear on the court. Executing the correct shot type from a Chance Spot launches powerful, fast-paced returns. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash introduces the Jump Shot, allowing players to leap into the air to hit high-bouncing balls, and the Mega Mushroom, which periodically drops onto the court to temporarily enlarge a character, increasing their reach and shot power.
Alongside standard Knockout Challenge and Classic Tennis modes, players can train and pair up with physical Amiibo figures in doubles matches, or take their skills online in global head-to-head competition.
