In Dreamals: Dream Quest, players control three distinct animals—a dog, a goat, and a parrot—each possessing a single, specialized movement skill. The dog can only move horizontally, the goat can jump high vertically, and the parrot can float across gaps.
The core mechanic revolves around combining these characters. By bumping two or three animals together on the grid, they merge into a single compound creature that inherits the combined movement traits of its individual parts (e.g., combining the dog and goat creates a creature that can both walk horizontally and jump). Players can also split merged characters apart at specific map locations to solve multi-stage environmental puzzles.
The game features over 100 progressively difficult levels filled with spikes, moving platforms, block puzzles, and portal doors. On the Nintendo Wii U, the game offers responsive controller inputs and full support for Off-TV Play, allowing players to solve puzzles directly on the GamePad display.
